Do I need to attend to all tryouts?

  • Yes

How many teams are in the MWJHL?

  • Good news! we have expanded from 7 to 8 teams this season!

How do I get on a team?

  • A draft of players is held after the tryouts and you will receive a call by the team that selected you, usually within 24 hours afer the draft.

What if I want to play on a specfic team, can I choose my team?

  • No, the MWJHL is a competive league and we ask that players embrace the team that they were drafted by. This is done to ensure all teams remain competitive.
  • in the past the MWJHL has allowed sisters and daughters of coaches to play on the same team, this year (2025) at the annual general meeting the consitution was updated in that teams must draft these players, this was done so that teams remain competitive.  

What will my ice time be like?

  • The MWJHL is a competive league and ice time/fair play will be a coaches decison. 
  • Coaches will have a team meeting outling their expectations.

How long will I be on the team that selected me?

  • up to 4 years depending on your birth year
  • some will players may be selected as an overage player (up to 3 per team) so you may get an extra year.
  • you must have played the previous season to be eligible as an overage player.

Can I be released or traded?

  • Yes you can be released/traded during the season.
  • You can also be released/traded during the off season.
  • this situation rarely occurs.

If I am released what happens next?

  • you maybe picked up another team if you are released during the season.
  • if you are not picked up you are encouraged to register for the next season.

How many games are there?

  • last season was 24 games, plus playoffs and practice was once a week.
  • season runs from September through to approximatly the 3rd week in March.

Do all teams make the playoffs?

  • Yes, Round 1 is Best of 3, Semi-finals and Finals are best of 5

When are practices held?

  • each team is assigned 1 hour of practice ice, during the week.

When does the schedule come out?

  • the scheduled is released in September for the entire season, to allow players to plan around their personal schedules.

Does it cost to watch the MWJHL?

  • Yes, we have a season ticket and single game entrance fee options.

MWJHL volunteering

  • Each player is expected to have 2 volunteers to work the game entrance gate for their team during home games during  the regular season and playoffs. Your team manager will provide all the details.
