RUBBING SHOULDERS WITH THE “BIG GUY”- MWJHL Volunteer
and Fan
Chris Benson
came on board shortly
after Linda had volunteered for the MWJHL about 4 years
ago and with him he brought several skills besides a
dynamic personality. We use the word “persona” and Chris
literally lived up to being the “Big Guy” in many ways.
He was a skilled accountant and was very thorough and
diligent about keeping the books straight for the MWJHL
and no expense went unrecorded without a receipt. He was
the keeper of the keys.
He also brought on board A & W Restaurants as a major
and continuing sponsor to our league and would you
believe it the A & W Silvertips are having a splendid
year first capturing the League title for the first time
but also beginning their first final in their short
history. They will battle Prairie Blaze for Junior
Women’s supremacy in Manitoba for 2010.
Chris always was on the lookout for supporters for all
events whether it be the Golf Tournament (man, could he
hit the ball), a Bud n’ Spud or other event. He also
chaired the Draft annually and gained much respect for
his straight forward understanding and delivery of the
draft format. He was not a political type and stayed
away from Hockey Manitoba meetings but never missed an
Executive meeting for the MWJHL.
He enjoyed and learned about players and their families
in the league and knew when someone needed some extra
attention. He insisted on deadlines but knew when to
relent just a little bit.
In the stands we have missed him this year as his voice
travelled many wave lengths and one could say he loved
his Northern Stars as his daughter played for them
before graduating and moving on to the WWHL. He always
stopped short of giving them any special treatment
though.
So we thank the “Big Guy” for his many contributions,
his aura, loyalty and love of the league. He will be a
“shining star” up in our night sky and it is very
fitting. We will miss him.

BLIZZARD IN PINK!

A windmill greeted Coach Doug Corby and I
as we arrived in Holland, Manitoba Friday, Dec. 4 for
the 7:30 pm game between the Manitoba Blizzard and the
Manitoba Women’s Junior League leading A & W Silvertips.
Greeted by a friendly Megan Abernethy at the door and
the a number of resident Holland and outlying area
residents we were “tickled pink” to be part of a special
weekend of Pink jerseys, great hockey and fundraising to
defeat cancer. We would also like to thank Mrs.
Abernethy, Krystal Mangin and Mr. Larry Michaels for
keeping us well informed and welcome.
This special event weekend generated around Jessie
Abernethy when she phoned one day and asked if the MWJHL
would visit Holland for a game and so we did. Jessie has
been recovering from a broken ankle and made her return
to the ice that Friday night and did not miss a step out
on the ice. The Manitoba Blizzard played a truly strong
game and had a final minute 1 goal lead when the
continually surprising Silvertips came back to tie it
all up with seconds remaining. Dana Mangin and Melanie
Toupin both played exceptionally strong games. The
Blizzard also welcomed back Sam Frost (1 goal, 1 assist)
from last weeks scary head injury. Thank you to the town
of Holland, our players, the local team coaches for the
exceptional AP players and parents/ grandparents and
interested parties that made the trip to support both
the cause and the MWJHL. And a special Thanks to our
photographer Mrs. McMannis.

A Special Event This Year!!!
Some members of the Manitoba Women’s Junior Hockey League are taking the ultimate test Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009. They donated their time to compete against and among some of the best players in the province in an exciting showdown featuring females from the University of Manitoba Bisons and the Under-18 provincial team. The game
was a first-time event called Strides for the Cure, which
was been organized to benefit the Believe in the Goal Foundation Inc. founded by Todd Davison. Believe in the Goal raises money for cancer patient care in Manitoba and special projects for children with cancer.
